Kalangan pendidik dan orangtua siswa diimbau mewaspadai penggunaan plastik yang mengandung bahan kimia berbahaya pada perlengkapan alat tulis. Salah satu zat aditif berbahaya itu adalah phthalate, bahan pembuatan penghapus yang banyak digunakan siswa sekolah.
Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) tengah mengkaji kecenderungan adanya bahan kimia pada alat kelengkapan siswa dan mainan anak-anak. Kajian dilakukan karena diduga kuat sejumlah alat kelengkapan sekolah dan mainan anak-anak itu mengandung zat kimia berbahaya.
Menurut Head Division of Science and Technology Service LIPI Agus Haryono, bahan plastik berbahaya itu antara lain monomer, zat tersisa yang tidak bereaksi saat pembentukan polimer. Styrofoam adalah salah satu bentuk monomer berbahaya. Selain monomer, zat berbahaya lainnya adalah pelentur plastik jenis phthalate.
Dalam keperluan sehari-hari, phthalate dipakai sebagai pelembut plastik mainan anak-anak, pipa PVC, fraksi minyak dalam parfum, zat tambahan dalam hairspray, zat tambahan pengoles kayu, dan pelentur jok mobil.
"Di dunia alat tulis, phthalate digunakan dalam pembuatan penghapus, untuk melembutkan karet agar mudah dibentuk," ungkap Agus dalam seminar "Alat Pendidikan Sehat bagi Siswa" di Balai Patriot, Kompleks Pemkot Bekasi, Rabu (9/6/2010).
Selain penghapus, alat kelengkapan lain yang patut diwaspadai adalah krayon dan spidol. Krayon diduga mengandung unsur logam berat dan asbestos yang dalam jangka panjang menyebabkan gangguan pada otak, sistem saraf, dan metabolisme tubuh, serta memicu kanker. Sementara pelarut tinta spidol, xylene, bisa menyebabkan gangguan saraf jika terhirup dalam jumlah besar.
Dalam jangka pendek, pengaruh yang bisa dirasakan biasanya anak-anak mengalami mual, muntah, sakit perut, dan diare. Bahan-bahan berbahaya itu bisa masuk ke tubuh anak-anak melalui mulut, saat alat-alat itu dikulum, atau melalui hidung, saat anak-anak menghirup udara di sekitarnya.
"Sampai saat ini belum ada angka pasti korban akibat penggunaan bahan-bahan berbahaya itu. Mungkin karena itu sampai saat ini tidak ada larangan tegas dari pemerintah terkait penggunaan bahan-bahan tersebut," ujar Agus.
Pengurus YLKI, Huzna Zahir, mengatakan, di negara maju penggunaan plastik diatur dengan ketat, sedangkan di Indonesia hingga kini belum ada pengawasannya. Semestinya, kata dia, pemerintah memiliki standar baku yang harus dipenuhi pada mainan dan alat kelengkapan sekolah yang terbuat dari plastik.
